Why I'm Saying No to the Apple Watch, A Dad's Perspective
— Fatherhood — 2 min read
As a father, I'm constantly looking for ways to simplify my life while also staying connected to the world around me. I was an Apple Watch user in the past and it is ok for activity tracking but after careful consideration, I've decided to take a stand against it, and here's why.
Distraction Over Connection
It's easy to get sucked into the digital vortex. The Apple Watch, while undoubtedly a marvel of technology, can exacerbate this problem. Instead of fostering meaningful connections with our loved ones, it can pull us further into the realm of notifications and apps, taking away from precious moments with family.
Health vs. Hype
Sure, the Apple Watch boasts impressive health-tracking features. But let's not forget that it's not a replacement for professional medical advice or just a simple heart rate tracker like the ones from Polar. Relying solely on a device to monitor our health can give a false sense of security and may even discourage us from seeking proper medical attention when needed.
Tech Overload
As parents, we're already inundated with screens everywhere we turn. From smartphones to tablets to laptops, our lives are saturated with technology. Adding another gadget into the mix, especially one that encourages constant connectivity, may not be the best choice for our mental well-being. And yet another device to keep charged.
Setting an Example
Our children look up to us as role models, whether we realize it or not. By prioritizing real-world interactions over the allure of flashy gadgets, we're teaching them valuable lessons about balance and mindfulness in a digital age.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not here to bash Apple or condemn anyone who chooses to embrace the Apple Watch lifestyle. After all, technology is a tool, and how we use it ultimately determines its impact on our lives. But as a dad who values quality time with family and meaningful connections, I've made the conscious decision to opt out of the Apple Watch craze. What Did I replace it with?
I've opted for some classic watches to track time, which can also serve as stylish accessories. Currently, I have the Citizen Promaster Dive with a black rubber strap. It keeps accurate time, and I can rotate the bezel to track elapsed time, perfect for measuring one-hour intervals.
I'll be focusing on finding joy in the simple things, like playing catch with my kids in the backyard or sharing a meal together as a family. And who knows, maybe by disconnecting from the digital noise, we'll discover a richer, more fulfilling way of life.
